A seemingly complicated story about the search for the murderer of two dead people who are first found, only to disappear again shortly afterwards. No matter how hard Commissioner Baxter tries, his investigation is constantly disrupted by Mrs. Piper, whose interference stems not only from her sense of importance, but also from the fact that many, many years ago, she had an affair with the then-young Baxter.

Inspector Dupin finds himself entangled in several mysteries at once: the discovery of a corpse on a remote Atlantic island, the mystery surrounding a Celtic musical instrument, and the search for the true cause of a tragedy.

To go by the book and the locations, it is about two murders in the fishing business in the extreme west of Brittany around the bay of Douarnenez. A fisherwoman is found with her throat slit next to the fish auctioning hall in Douarnenez.

Something is wrong with the saline deposits in Guérande: Therefore, the journalist Lilou who investigates in that case contacts her friend inspector Dupin and asks for an urgent meeting. They agree to meet at the suspicious place, where according to Lilou's findings there is massive environment danger caused by the company producing the salt. Instead of Lilou, a bullet meets Dupin's arm who just in the last second can escape from the sniper. Lilou has disappeared. The inspector who is responsible for the precinct, Rose, doesn't like to see Dupin investigating the whereabouts of Lilou who finally was found dead. Nevertheless, Dupin and his team who continue their investigations against the will of Rose find out that the reason for Lilou's murder are the dirty methods of the powerful local salt industry.

An eccentric former actress finds a body which disappears into thin air.

While drinking coffee at an outdoor café, Dupin sees a man drop to his death.

Kadeg's aunt is dead and he is admitted to hospital seriously injured. Dupin takes a closer look at his assistant's family and discovers that this was not the only mysterious death in their circle.

A top restaurateur is stabbed by her sister and Dupin investigates the true reason of the murder.
